Contractors removing the Maury pedestal from Monument Avenue discover what they believe to be the names of the brick masons inscribed in mortar inside the pedestal February 2, 2022, in Richmond, VA. The writing says:
“1928
C. Dittmann
M. Chase
R. Tinsley”
Also, contractors and preservationists believe the black material is tar, used to waterproof the interior of the monument.
